Melissa Harris-Perry brings annual Freedom School to Winston-Salem

Today the Anna Julia Cooper Center kicked off its annual Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools.  Fifty children in grades 3-5 will spend the next six weeks of their summer as part of this exciting program, offered free of charge to families by the AJC Center Freedom School.

Perry Political Partnership principal, Melissa Harris-Perry, is founding director of the Anna Julia Cooper Center. Its mission- to advance justice through intersectional scholarship and engagement – is manifest in the work of Freedom School.

Freedom Schools were started to bridge the gap for students from low income backgrounds who are more likely to lose skills in reading and other subjects over the summer.  This “summer slide,” as it is often called, can cause students to fall three to five years behind in school over time. That is exactly why AJC Center Associate Director and Assistant Professor of Education, Dr. Dani Parker-Moore initiated the program through the Anna Julia Cooper Center in 2017 to serve low income children in our community here in Winston-Salem.

Freedom School curriculum is culturally specific and locally relevant.  The Anna Julia Cooper Center works to ensure this is true for the students and families participating in the program.  Last summer students heard from Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza, who read and discussed Voice of Freedom: Fannie Lou Hamer, Spirit of the Civil Rights Movement by Carole Boston Weatherford.

Last summer student participants demonstrated a five month reading gain after 6 weeks the AJC Center program.  Since its founding in 1995, Freedom Schools have offered summer reading programs to nearly 140,000 students. Dr. Harris-Perry and the Anna Julia Cooper Center look forward broadening their impact this summer and in the coming years through the Anna Julia Cooper Freedom School.

Why Aren’t Top Democrats Acknowledging Black Women Running for Office?

“We’ve been carrying the water forever. Now we deliver votes, but we don’t get the backing of the party and others,” said Denise “DD” Adams, who recently won her primary in North Carolina’s 5th congressional district. The district is also heavily Republican, but Adams doesn’t think that should matter. “Once the primary is over, why wouldn’t you call and congratulate me? It would cost you nothing.”

That isn’t standard practice for the campaign arm, as former DCCC Chair and New York Representative Steve Israel told me in an interview. “The DCCC’s sole mission is to win elections, and they make decisions on resource allocation, field staff, and other means of support based on one thing,” he said, “and that is viability.” Cont…

Karen Mallard in Washington Post: From the classroom to the campaign trail: Emboldened teachers run for office

One recent afternoon, reading teacher Karen Mallard settled into a kindergarten classroom at Greenbrier Primary School in Chesapeake, Va., as young readers worked through a book about pets. Then, she headed home to brush up on Iran nuclear policy.

Mallard has been leading a double life for the past several months, spending her days helping young readers and then heading to a faculty bathroom to change into a suit when the afternoon bell rings so she can hit the campaign trail. Mallard, who calls herself the “Teacher for Congress,” is running a campaign for the Democratic nomination in Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District.

“I ran to make education an issue,” said Mallard, whose cont…

Virginia Democratic candidates in 2nd Congressional District primary generally agree but have different styles

Democrats, who have been waiting for two years for another shot at U.S. Rep. Scott Taylor, a Virginia Beach Republican, will decide next week which of two determined women will carry their banner in November.

The choice in the June 12 primary is between a longtime teacher with decades of local political activism and a retired Navy officer and businesswoman who contends her leadership experience gives her an edge.

The teacher, Karen Mallard, and the former commander, Elaine Luria, agree on many issues. They want the Affordable Care Act bolstered, not dismantled. Cont…
